Smoky quartz is a silicon dioxide mineral (SiO2). The smoky quartz specimens at Diamond Hill range in color from very light gray to almost black, some with a tinge of amethyst. The crystals get their smoky color through radiation exposure from surrounding rocks, and unlike the amethyst, the smoky crystals do not seem to lose their color when exposed to sunlight. The finest crystals to ever come from the mine were discovered in October of 2005. The crystals were discovered in a collapsed pocket in the smoky pit. These crystals exhibited shiny faces and multiple phantom inclusions making them unique to the site.

Iron stained phantom smoky quartz crystal cluster, many of the smoky crystals and clusters from this pocket were covered with the iron stain in various hues.
